Burigi-Chato National Park, established as a national park in 2019, spans an impressive 4,707 square kilometers, making it the fourth-largest in Tanzania. Located in the western part of the country, it stretches from Lake Victoria in the east to the border with Rwanda in the west, encompassing a wide variety of ecosystems. The park is characterized by freshwater lakes, rolling hills, forests, plains, swamps, and floodplains, with a dominant Miombo woodland savanna, rich in biodiversity. The landscape features a dramatic mix of valleys, rocky crags, and escarpments, contributing to its scenic beauty
One of the key highlights of the park is Lake Burigi, the third-largest lake in Tanzania, surrounded by tranquil bays, islands, and swamps. This area is home to rare species such as the sitatunga antelope and the elusive shoebill stork. Wildlife is abundant, with elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and various antelopes including sable and roan. Predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam the park, making it an excellent destination for game viewing.
For visitors, the park offers numerous activities, including game drives, birdwatching, fishing, and hiking, along with the unique opportunity for boating on its lakes. The best time to visit is from June to September, during the dry season, when the weather is pleasant, and the park is more accessible
